Love That Was Never Ours

Introduction: Love is never as simple as the stories tell us. It isn’t just about stolen glances and late-night talks—it’s about fighting for each other when everything feels like it’s falling apart. But what happens when love, no matter how deep, isn’t enough? This poem gave us a story that felt real—two souls drawn together yet torn apart by who they are. This poem captures that journey: the magic of beginnings, the unraveling, and the pain of letting go.

I met you on a summer day,

When words were few, but eyes would say.

A coffee spill, a nervous grin,

That’s how our story would begin.

You coded worlds, so sharp, so bright,

I chased the stars, the endless night.

You spoke of logic, math, and rules,

I broke the norms, defied the schools.

Yet somehow, in that chaos wild,

We laughed, we danced, we stayed awhile.

The world felt lighter, hearts took flight,

As day turned dusk and wrong felt right.

We’d whisper dreams in twilight hours,

Get lost in books and rooftop towers.

You traced the freckles on my skin,

I swore our love could never dim.

Hand in hand through rain and sun,

Believing we were always one.

Even when silence took its place,

Your heartbeat kept me wrapped in grace.

But love is more than nights that glow,

It’s standing firm when tempers show.

And somewhere deep, we lost our way,

As fights replaced the words we’d say.

You wanted paths, so straight, so neat,

I longed for roads beneath my feet.

You held the future, mapped and planned,

I left my fate in shifting sands.

I spoke in storms, in restless art,

You held your walls around your heart.

Each fight, a battle, no one won,

Until we turned, and love was gone.

The ring still shone upon my hand,

A promise made, too weak to stand.

Yet in your eyes, I saw the truth,

The love we built had lost its roots.

The night was cold, the air was thin,

We sat in quiet, hearts caved in.

No raging words, no angry cries,

Just shattered dreams and long goodbyes.

You took my hands, held on too tight,

But love’s not love if built on fight.

And so, we chose to set it free,

For love should not be misery.

With trembling lips and tearful eyes,

You whispered soft, through aching sighs,

A love once bright, had lost its light,

No wedding bells, no vows in sight.

I stood up first, walked past the door,

Yet turned around, just once, once more.

My voice was low, my gaze was rife,

As I said—

So then, goodbye, future wife.

Reflections: Is love supposed to conquer all, or are there times when letting go is the only way to set each other free? This poem reminds us that love isn’t always about forever—it’s about growth, about learning when to fight and when to walk away.
