When Midnight Held It’s Breath

Introduction: Love and time have always been entwined—one fleeting, the other infinite. But what if, for two souls, time refused to move?
"When Midnight Held Its Breath" is a tale of love that defied fate, of a promise made under the chime of a clock that would not let go. A love story suspended in time, waiting for the moment when they could meet again. If you’ve ever longed for someone beyond the reach of years, if you’ve ever wondered whether love could pause the universe itself—this poem is for you.

The clock struck twelve, the stars stood still,
Yet only silence heard her cry.
She waited there, as time stood by,
Beneath the sky so vast and chill.

Beneath the grand, old clocktower’s face,
They vowed to meet in time’s embrace.
But where was he? What held him back?
The clock had stopped—frozen, black.

She glanced down at her watch once more,
While midnight rang—a chime of lore.
Yet in her chest, a whispering fear—
Had he forgotten the one so dear?

A part of her longed to stay,
Yet another begged to walk away.
But love, she swore, was strong and true,
So she waited beneath the sky so blue.

Hours had passed, yet the clock stood still,
As she lingered beside the silent hill.
And in the hush of the midnight air,
She traced old memories, soft and rare.

People came, they glanced, and left away,
Yet her gaze refused to sway.
She watched the path where he would be,
For love had bound her heart to thee.

She recalled the day their paths had split,
Yet love endured—unscathed, unlit.
Beneath the chime of midnight’s grace,
They vowed to meet in this same place.

She took a step, her heart held tight,
The air was thick, the moon burned white.
A whisper danced upon the air,
A voice so soft—was someone there?

The winds grew still, the world felt strange,
As if it paused, as if it changed.
A shadow stood where none had been,
Yet somehow, still, it felt like him.

His face untouched by time’s cruel tide,
The same warm gaze, the same soft stride.
She gasped, she swayed, her vision blurred,
Yet he was real—his voice was heard.

"I’ve waited here, through endless years,
Through silent nights and hollow fears.
The clock had stopped, it sealed our fate,
So I could stand, so I could wait."

Her fingers trembled, eyes went wide,
"How can this be? You should have died."
Yet in his touch, so cold, so true,
She knew he'd stayed—for love, for you.

The town had aged, the world had spun,
Yet for them both, time came undone.
For when they vowed beneath the chime,
The clock had bound them both in time.

Her heart still raced, her soul felt light,
The world around them bathed in white.
The frozen hands began to turn,
As fate allowed their love to burn.

The moment passed, the night stood still,
Yet time bent softly to their will.
As midnight’s final bell rang through,
The world had lost—yet love shone true.

A breath, a step, she took his hand,
No fear remained, no need to stand.
The town awoke, the winds had sighed—
Yet neither stayed. They walked inside.

The clock struck one, its spell complete,
Two souls entwined, their love replete.
No trace was left, no echoes called,
Yet somewhere—love still stood enthralled.

Reflection: Is love bound by time, or does time bow to love?
This poem explores the endless devotion of two souls caught between fate and eternity. The idea that time itself could freeze for a promise, that love could keep one waiting beyond the years, is a theme both tragic and beautiful. Have you ever felt a connection so strong that it seemed to exist beyond time? Have you ever waited for someone, believing they would return?
